On the Tarka Trail in North Devon...

...where the deer run wild among oak trees that were originally planted for shipbuilding. In this beautiful setting is a rather special spring from which we collect the naturally flowing crystal clear water.

The  Cottage and La Retraite

We have a compact, but luxurious, one-bedroom cottage for self-catering holidays. The cottage is approached by a no-through road (directly overlooking the Bristol Channel and leading to the beach) with almost no passing traffic and is a perfect choice for your peaceful and tranquil holiday. The Cottage is a detached building next to a National Trust bridle path.

La Retraite is a larger, more luxurious timber building within the grounds above the main house. See the pictures!

The owners’ premises are on adjoining land. The National Trust now owns over forty percent of the coastline in Devon: Woody Bay was one of the first of these acquisitions in 1967.   This area is particularly disposed to walkers and hikers. Abandoned post-medieval lime kilns can be seen at Woody Bay beach and there is a path leading from Woody Bay to the Roman signal station on the knoll above Martinhoe.

You will love the fantastic views of the coastline from above the Bay and the road leading down to the beach has excellent views to Wales.

Horse riding, walking and sea, lake and fly-fishing are all available nearby with golf at Saunton or Ilfracombe a 30 minute drive away.  Wild fallow and red deer are often sighted in the area along with many friendly squirrels.  The local village amenities of Lynton and Lynmouth are a short distance away and there are coastal paths to both places if you prefer walking to driving.  Eating and drinking establishments plus shops of most types are within a short drive. A local hotel offering refreshments to non-residents is within a 5-10 minute walk (sometimes closed during winter periods).

It is 16 miles to the historic market town of Barnstaple and 20 miles to the delightful Somerset seaside resort of Minehead.
